Welcome to Fair Recognition Australia!

Mission Statement

Fair Recognition Australia is a community-driven initiative dedicated to advocating for fair and transparent recognition of prior learning (RPL) across Australian universities. We believe that all students and professionals should have equitable access to academic credit for their real-world skills, knowledge, and experience, regardless of the terminology or level of prior qualifications. Through shared experiences, collective advocacy, and resource sharing, we aim to drive reform in university RPL policies, fostering a higher education system that respects and values diverse learning journeys.

Goals

  1. Raise Awareness: Educate students and the broader public about their rights regarding RPL, including the principles behind fair RPL practices, the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), and how to navigate the process across different institutions.
  2. Support & Empower Students: Provide a supportive space where students can share their RPL experiences, seek advice, and connect with others who have navigated similar challenges. Through this network, we aim to empower students to advocate for themselves and pursue fair credit for their prior learning.
  3. Promote Transparency in RPL Policies: Advocate for transparency and consistency in how universities assess and apply RPL. We will work to encourage universities to publicly clarify their RPL standards, decision-making processes, and criteria, ensuring students have a clear understanding before applying.
  4. Challenge Unfair Practices: Identify and address instances where RPL policies seem overly rigid, arbitrary, or profit-driven. By gathering testimonials, research, and data, we aim to challenge practices that disproportionately deny students fair recognition based on semantics or technicalities.
  5. Collaborate for Policy Reform: Engage with higher education regulatory bodies like TEQSA and the Ombudsman to promote RPL reform. We will seek to partner with these bodies, as well as universities, to ensure that RPL policies evolve in a way that supports diverse learning pathways and respects practical competencies alongside academic qualifications.
  6. Create Resources & Guides: Develop and distribute resources to help students understand the RPL application process, anticipate potential barriers, and prepare strong applications. These guides will offer practical advice on how to approach RPL applications strategically, with tips for gathering evidence and highlighting relevant experience.
  7. Foster a Culture of Respect for Prior Learning: Advocate for a cultural shift within Australian universities to respect and value experiential learning as much as traditional academic pathways. By highlighting the achievements and competencies of individuals with diverse educational backgrounds, we aim to shift perceptions and promote inclusivity within higher education.
